Italy is among those countries where atmospheric phenomena such as lightning deserve particular attention. According to collected data, an average of 700,000 lightning discharges occur every year in our country, with peaks in the summer months, especially July and August.

But which areas are most at risk? Among the most affected regions are the Prealpine reliefs, the lake regions in Lombardy, the Apennines, and also urban areas near Rome.

The phenomenon is not uniform across the territory: the ground flash density (NG) describes the average number of lightning strikes per km² per year, helping to identify where stronger protection measures are needed.
