WHEN SIZE ISN’T EVERYTHING: ZOTUP, A FAMILY‑RUN COMPANY, PROTECTS THE WORLD’S LARGEST AMAZON SITE
INDIA With its 1.8 million square meters (about 65 football fields), the office located in Hyderabad (Telangana) in southern India is, to date, the largest Amazon headquarter in the world.
15 floors, 49 elevators, a heliport, several prayer rooms, a small synthetic cricket ground and a 24-hour café on a campus that, according to the company, is made of an amount of iron equal to 2 ½ times that was used in the construction of the Eiffel Tower. Built from 2016 to 2019, the headquarter can accommodate 15.000 employees. An ambitious project that, however, has faced several challenges including the rejection by local businesses and politicians, concerned about the impact it would have caused within the market. Hyderabad, known as the "City of Pearls", is a city of almost 10 million inhabitants and has the fastest growing market in terms of Internet users in the world. Located in the southern part of the state of Telangana, in south-eastern India 1.666 km south of Delhi, 699 km south-east of Mumbai and 570 km north of Bangalore, it has emerged in recent years as a financial and technological center, becoming the Indian base of several other multinationals such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Apple.
In collaboration with the manufacturer of switchboards Elins Switchboards Pvt. Ltd. (Bangalore, State-Karnataka, India) and the designer Mr. Shambanna S. of Electron Consultants (Bangalore, State-Natakarka, India), ZOTUP took part in a project of extreme importance, protecting the data centers of one of the most important companies in the world.
Two surge arrester models (SPD) were used for this purpose:
- 24 pieces of code 215 141, model ZOTUPLIMITER L 25/100 230 t ff 3+1;
- 206 pieces of code 210 141, model ZOTUPLIMITER L 3/30 230 t ff 3+1.
These are tetrapolar surge arresters typically installed in three-phase circuits with neutral 230/240 V in TT systems, in which neutral and masses are connected to the ground. Having both the teleportation contact, not required overcurrent limitation with line CB 160 A or for rated short-circuit current Isccr 5ka eff, the two arresters have the three ZOTUP characteristics listed above: Fuse Fuse Integrated (ff), Three-color status indicator with progressive indication of residual performance (which in this case occurs remotely) and fulfillment of the Pollution Degree 3, excellent for protecting unloaders installed in a territory characterized by high pollution and extreme humidity.
Since it is a headquarter and not a warehouse (within which, therefore, there are data centers), the worst situation that can occur is the so-called "downtime". In order to cope with this unforeseen situation, it is necessary to have an extremely clear situation of the remaining life of the unloader in such a way as to intervene promptly with its replacement, avoiding, in addition to the damage to the framework, also large fines and inconveniences due to interruptions of orders and transactions.
