SPD: INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION

The interaction between over-current limitation of the system and a surge arrester must be established at the planning stage and implemented at the installation phase. It’s necessary refer to the national Installations standards in addition to the EN 62305. It’s necessary to follow the indications supplied in the next tables by considering the line conductor cross-section S1 and the main protection type (MCB or fuse).

ZOTUP

The interaction between over-current limitation of the system and a surge arrester must be established at the planning stage and implemented at the installation phase. It’s necessary refer to the national Installations standards in addition to the EN 62305.
ZOTUP SPDs grant a definite breaking capacity that allow the independent opening of the short circuit created when the SPD reach his end of life. If the short circuit value of the installation is less than the definite SPD breaking capacity it is possible to avoid the back-up protection in series to the SPD with relevant benefits. In order to simplify the evaluation of this opportunity, the following table allows to define rapidly and in a precautionary way, the length of cable over which the backup/support fuse is not required. The cable length depend on the rated power of the MV/LV transformer and the cable cross section. With an accurate calculation of the ICC, considering the real cross-section of the conductors, the length of cable that allows to avoid the installation of backup fuse is less than the value of the table (as it assumes, in a precautionary way, a constant wire section) .

If short circuit current at the ZOTUP installation point is higher than the SPD breaking capacity, it is ncessary to install a backup fuse/support in series to the SPD.
